7 Healthy Habits to Start This Spring

IMG_6711 Spring is a time for renewal and it is the best time to shed those winter pounds and get outside. Making the transition to a healthier lifestyle can make you feel better and live longer. “A study published in 2009 by the British Medical Journal of 20,000 British folk, shows that you can cut your risk of having a stroke in half by being active for 30 minuets a day, eating 5 daily servings of fruit and vegetables and avoiding cigarettes and excess alcohol.”

  1. Floss Daily, a study conducted by the New York University “showed that daily flossing reduced  the amount of gum-disease-causing bacteria in the mouth.” Further studies show high amounts of bacteria in the mouth are a sign of thickening  in arteries. (US News)
  2. Limit Your TV, Video Game and Computer time. Too much time in front of a screen encourage a sedentary lifestyle and can lead to obesity, according the American Heart Association. 
  3. Move It! Whether, its Zumba, running, basketball after work or traditional weightlifting get active at least 30 minuets a day. The more you stay active the better you will feel and the more energy you will have. Studies show “exercise can improve your mood, mental acuity, balance, muscle mass, and bones.
  4. Get Your Rest. Sleep allows your body to recharge and refresh. Sleep allows time for your body to regulate and heal cells. Get between 6-8 hours of sleep every night.
  5. Add Color to Your diet. Give your body the nutrients it needs to perform its best by eating a diet filled of fresh fruits and veggies.
  6. Drink Water. Drinking 2-3 liters of water a day can speed up your metabolism. According to WebMd, your body looses fluids throughout the day, drinking water helps to recharge your body. Drinking water also helps to fortify your skin and kidneys.
  7. Take care of your mental Health. Stress can weigh your body down like a greasy diet and worrying only leads to more worries. Accept the fact that you did your best and let the rest go. Find something that helps you manage stress like yoga, mediation or even take up kickboxing just for the punching bag.
