A Guide in Self-Discovery + Self-Compassion

The journey of self love depends on growth and healing. To grow into our best self, we must learn to let go of what no longer serves us. Take an inventory of your life, your highs and lows and let go of negative thinking, harsh judgments, unnecessary anger and allow yourself to just be. Become so confident in who you are, you are not phased by the actions of others. This year dedicate even more to loving and knowing yourself, by coming to a fuller understanding of what is for you and what is not for you.

If you are feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of life, make some time do something that brings you joy. Finish reading that book you started last month. Write in a journal about how your feeling lately. Buy yourself some flowers. Take a long bath and drink herbal tea.

 Vulnerability & Authenticity

Become comfortable with being your authentic self at all times. Show up in your life as your true self. Let go of the notion that you have to hide who you are to be taken seriously or to be respected. Allow yourself to be authentic and don’t be afraid to show up for yourself by speaking what you need and saying how you feel. By being honest with yourself and others, people will respect you for it. Allow yourself to be vulnerable by letting down your guard. Take off your mask and let people see the real you. The more open and honest you are about who you are, what you need and what struggles you face the more others can be authentic with you by having more meaningful conversations. Being vulnerable also gives you the opportunity to be real with yourself about what you need to grow and heal.

Mindfulness & Meditation

Mindfulness involves being aware of how your body is feeling in the present moment. Mindfulness is about being consciously aware of your actions and feelings. A daily mindfulness practice involves living with intention and purpose. Mindfulness means to create space to live guided by your vision and to live from a place of peace. To cultivate mindfulness, take a deep breath, then ask yourself “how do I feel in this moment?”

One way to cultivate mindfulness is to develop a meditation practice. Meditation is not grounded in any particular religion, it is simply an exercise to rest the mind, helping you to feel more balanced and relaxed. Meditation begins by taking several deep breaths and releasing your awareness from the distractions around you. The goal of meditation is to give your mind a break, and a chance to heal from stress. Meditation is more about noticing how your body feels and less about fighting away thoughts. Meditation encourages you to respond rather than react during life’s stressful moments.

Gratitude

I also encourage you to show yourself a bit of gratitude for doing the work to become your best self and live your best life. It is easy to blame others and your environment when life gets stressful but it takes real courage to look from within and analyze your own actions and reactions. This week I encourage you to take an inventory of the things you have that others may not and cultivate a grateful spirit. Learn to be grateful for what you have and see that you are already operating from a place of abundance. Having a grateful spirit puts you inline to receive more goodness.

  1. I was very impressed with this site and decided to introduce as many young black women and girls to this new found source of inspiration and uplifting.
A few days later, one young lady thanked me for turning her on to the blog, as something of what she read related directly to her life experience.
I cannot take any credit … kudos and much respect ✊ to Jessica Corbin.
