#BringBackOurGirls is not simply a hashtag it is an international call to action. Almost 300 girls were stolen from a school in Nigeria for the interest of human trafficking over a month ago. Fugitive Boko Harm has kidnapped these girls and has been caught on tape declaring that he intends to sell these girls. Hiram’s is a Islamic terrorist that claims Allah has told him to kidnap and sell the girls.
The hashtag #BringBackOurGirls has turned worlds eye on the nation of Nigeria and is forcing those in positions of power to do what it takes to free our girls. President and First Lady Obama have shared their sympathy for the girls and have also sent troops to aid in the return of the girls.
Young Girls are bought and sold all over the world into human trafficking rings. “Approximately 20 million adults and children are trafficked in the world today. Human trafficking is the third largest international crime industry, generating $32 Billion a year in profits. The average teen enters the sex trade in the U.S. is 12-14 years old. The female body has always been worth money. It has always been used abused. – Nicole Ari Parker. As a young woman, I understand that I had been blessed to have a family that cared about my well being so I did not enter into a life that made me only a sexual being. It is traumatizing however to think of going to school one day and being kidnapped and forced into sex trafficaking. It is even more appalling to think of my nieces, my female students being bought and sold into a world that seeks to disrespect and demoralize them.
As community members we have a say in what our government does. We have the power to petition for stronger laws against child molesters and sex traffickers.
Social media is a powerful force in today’s society, just as the activists are using social media to save our girls, predators and pimps are also using this tool to find our girls wearabouts. We need to inform our young ones of the dangers that are out there waiting on them. Our children need to be educated. Our young brothers need to learn to respect the body of black women. Young girls need to learn that they are more than their body. As a communuty we need to uplift each other.
