Apparently, there some unwritten rule that says we have to have our lives completely figured out by the time we are 30, but in this ever-changing society, that is not always, possible. Obtaining the dream job, getting married, buying a house and traveling the world are goals that are not as obtainable as we once believed. We were told to finish school and go to college, despite the student loans, and after graduation, everything would come together. However, that is not always the case. It is hard to find a career in this economy, let alone find a job in the industry you are passionate about.
As millennials, we are changing the workforce from 9 to 5’s, to digital careers. Ten years ago, some of the current top paying careers had not been formed yet. We are alive in an amazing time where we can create our own careers, set our own salary and hours. The world and the workforce have changed, and we must change the way we think about success. Some of the most successful people of our time did not come to be successful until their late 40’s or over. We have the power to define success for ourselves.
Tips for your journey:
Set Goals.
- Do something each day that puts you closer to where you want to be. Things don’t take shape by sitting idle. Achieving big goals, takes preparation, determination, and hard work.
Age is just a number.
- Don’t feel the need to check off the boxes by a certain time age. Celebrate each birthday for the lessons you’ve learned and for making it this far. If you’re alive, you still have time to make things happen.
Follow your passions.
- Keep following in pursuit of your passions and you will never be lost. Fear and doubt will creep in. That’s natural, but as long as you continue to believe in yourself and your aspirations, you will continue to move forward in the right direction.
Have a solid support system.
- Surround yourself with people that will build you up and support your goals. When you are feeling low, these are the people that will continue to lift you up. Learn to accept help, as well as be a source of support for others. When we are supported and support others, we create a better world.
Let go of any notions about where you should be in life by now and continue to follow a path that supports you and brings you joy. You define what success looks like to you. Stop listening to the naysayers and pay more attention to the positive thinkers, go-getters, cheerleaders, and healers. Success is not determined by the number of degrees, awards, followers or amount of money you have in the bank. “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do and liking how you do it.” – Maya Angelou.
